You have invited 10 friends you hadn't seen for a long time to dinner, and shortly before they arrive the power goes out across the whole area. The outage had already happened a few days earlier and lasted 4 hours. What do you do or think first of all, right away?

I fear the reactions of the people involved. Better this way — I have a bit more time to set the table and an excuse to create a more romantic atmosphere with candles. I think about buying a diesel power generator for the garden so I'm no longer a victim of these outages. I regret my original idea of meeting at an old pub dear to all my friends. I try to call the power company and the neighbours to find out how long the outage might last. I take it as a lesson about how hard it is, in life, to guarantee even the smallest things. I immediately call, email and text my friends to inform them, apologise and say I'll keep them updated. I think about the strong letter I'll write to the power company for the damage to my image and the failed service.

You are in a project team and you can't finish your task on time. You know this will delay everyone's delivery, and tomorrow you have a meeting with the project manager who wants to review the situation. What do you do or think first of all, right away?

You call in sick. You build a complex, detailed argument to show that the assigned task deserves further study. You plan to work through the night to finish everything. You try to find alternative technical solutions that are still feasible and viable. You feel angry and guilty for having spent the whole previous weekend relaxing with your family. You start weighing up the list of possible excuses to pick the most plausible and credible one. You think back to when you were given the task and that you didn't immediately object that it wasn't feasible in so little time. You go to the cinema.

You have organised a trip to the snow with other people and you have hired a coach. The meeting point is at 9:00 to leave. It's almost 9:00 and you are stuck in traffic. You definitely can't arrive before 9:15. What do you think or do first of all, right away?

I text the organiser to say I'm on my way but stuck in traffic for reasons beyond my control. I curse all the cars overtaking me on the right along the hard shoulder, making my lane's traffic worse. I use Google Maps and my phone to predict my exact arrival at the meeting point and estimate how late I'll be. I look for an alternative route or small detours to minimise the delay. I think about when I said it would be better to meet outside the centre to avoid these problems! I think how much better it would be with 2 more lanes or smart lane management at peak times. I drive onto the hard shoulder or the markings to dodge a bit of the traffic. I'm afraid I won't make it in time to catch the coach.
